Scope. Scale.

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The bus overshot the Brandbjerg Højskole by half a kilometre. This is where the young talents of UNLEASH had assembled to solve for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The air was crisp, the walk back was refreshing, though the suitcase I was dragging rattled the rustic serenity. The next 12 days were magical. Denmark was bustling with 1000 young social entrepreneurs from 129 countries working towards the 17 SDGs. We were assigned a folk high school based on our focus. Design sprints, brainstorming, art displays, music jams, spirited debates, and colourful prototypes stimulated our senses 24/7. The process was designed to channel our creative confidence. The scope of our aspiration, all SDGs. The scale of our expectation, all people on earth!

On the last evening, we sat down for a special dinner. The hall was humming with energy. Every improv was cheered. There was hope, and optimism, there were ideas, and specific plans. I was reminded of Sonia Johnson, who said, “We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.” That August, Denmark was hosting 1000 determined young leaders who covered the scope of SDGs. I wondered, what about scale to serve 3 billion people? Would we choose to go back to our niches and silos? How will I stay restless about the enormity of our responsibility? How will I stay unreasonable about the speed of response needed? How will I sustain my engagement with the young pioneers who can reshape our future? I don’t know, but I will try.
